#3182a – 1998 32c Celebrate the Century – 1900s: Model T Ford

Priced so that the average American could afford it, the Model T was sold from until In the early s, car dealers would try to create publicity for their new automobiles by hosting car races. Since Old Liz looked the worse for wear, as it was unpainted and lacked a hood, many spectators compared Old Liz to a tin can. By the start of the race, the car had the new nickname of “Tin Lizzie. But to everyone’s surprise, Tin Lizzie won the race. Having beaten even the most expensive other cars available at the time, Tin Lizzie proved both the durability and speed of the Model T. Tin Lizzie’s surprise win was reported in newspapers across the country, leading to the use of the nickname “Tin Lizzie” for all Model T cars. The car also had a couple of other nicknames—”Leaping Lena” and “flivver”—but it was the Tin Lizzie moniker that stuck.

Model T , automobile built by the Ford Motor Company from until Conceived by Henry Ford as practical, affordable transportation for the common man, it quickly became prized for its low cost, durability, versatility, and ease of maintenance. The automobile was also assembled at a Ford plant in Manchester , England , and at plants in continental Europe.

At such prices the Model T at times constituted as much as 40 percent of all cars sold in the United States. The Model T was offered in several body styles, including a five-seat touring car, a two-seat runabout, and a seven-seat town car. All bodies were mounted on a uniform inch-wheelbase chassis. A choice of colours was originally available, but from to the car was mass-produced in only one colour—black. The engine was simple and efficient, with all four cylinders cast in a single block and the cylinder head detachable for easy access and repair.

Model T: The Car for the Masses

Henry Ford revolutionized the automobile industry with the Model T. Instead of seeing the car as a plaything of the rich, Ford envisioned a vehicle “for the great multitude. The success of the Model T had a profound impact on the United States , as it made the automobile a common household possession. The automobile freed people to move, and with millions of vehicles clamoring for space, an infrastructure had to be created to support them. Roads, gas stations, and other amenities became part of an ever-expanding culture built around the automobile.

Average people were able to buy the Model T, and as a result the car became an everyday necessity.

On this date in , Ford Motor Co. revealed its 20th attempt at building a car for the masses. Named after the 20th letter in the alphabet, Ford’s Model T altered.

The first Ford Motor Co. It had a two-cylinder, eighthorsepower engine, wooden wheels, a two forward speed transmission and was not the Model A introduced as a successor to the Model T. The Model T still had wooden wheels, but a substantial four-cylinder engine, a separate coil for each cylinder spark plug, and no electric starter. It also had electric lights powered by a magneto. Ford pioneered the use of high-strength alloy steel, and cast-off Model T rear axles were much favored as a source of steel for farm repair work.

Even though the engine was substantially more powerful than that on previous models, it was still sometimes necessary to back up hills, since reverse had a lower gear ratio than the forward low gear. Another reason sometimes cited for backing up hills was that if the gas tank was low on fuel, going uphill in a forward direction would tilt the tank so much that fuel would not feed to the carburetor. 1908-1927 Ford Model T

The Ford Model T colloquially known as the ” tin Lizzie “, ” leaping Lena “, ” jitney ” or ” flivver ” is an automobile produced by Ford Motor Company from October 1, , to May 26, The relatively low price was partly the result of Ford’s efficient fabrication, including assembly line production instead of individual hand crafting. Although automobiles had been produced from the s , until the Model T was introduced in , they were mostly scarce, expensive, and often unreliable.

Positioned as reliable, easily maintained, mass-market transportation, the Model T was a great success.

Recognised the world over and manufactured in abundance, virtually unchanged between and , the Ford Model T remains one of the most significant cars ever made. When launched, the 20hp Model T was regarded as a powerful car, with its performance further enhanced from the use of light vanadium steel. These factors, combined with the reputation for offering robust strength capable of shrugging off a surprising amount of abuse, led to Henry Ford proudly watching the 15 millionth Model T depart from his Michigan factory in May Incredibly, 50, of these are in road-going condition.

To truly appreciate a Model T requires an appreciation of mechanical simplicity and a willingness to embrace a by-gone way of driving. With a credible 83lb-ft of torque, you can expect a top speed of 45mph and an average of mpg. This will, therefore, require a starting battery and the driver to hand-crank the engine from the front. Whichever model you examine, check the car starts easily by hand-cranking alone, as you may need to fall back on this technique. If this is the case, check that all connections are secure, to minimise fire risk.

Should you have engine issues to tackle, take heart in the fact that spares supply, including full engines, is plentiful. Model T parts were also used in the drivetrain of Fordson tractors until the mids, which may provide further opportunity to obtain the spares you need. Back in the day, it was common to wire electrical headlights up to the magneto, in which case your night lighting can dim significantly if you run the car too slowly!

Should you be examining a particularly early model, cooling will be via water pump but the vast majority of Ts are cooled by thermosiphon.

1927 Ford Model T Touring (Fifteen-Millionth Ford)

Between and , Ford would build some 15 million Model T cars. It was the longest production run of any automobile model in history until the Volkswagen Beetle surpassed it in Before the Model T, cars were a luxury item: At the beginning of , there were fewer than , on the road. It had a horsepower, four-cylinder engine and was made of a new kind of heat-treated steel, pioneered by French race car makers, that made it lighter it weighed just 1, pounds and stronger than its predecessors had been.

The Ford Model T was the first mass produced car in America. Better known as the ‘Tin Lizzie,’ the Model T and more importantly, its production.

From the February Issue of Car and Driver. Thus, we proceed with yet another trial of the Model S. This time we compare the electric car to its direct predecessor, the hydrocarbon-burning automobile, much as our forebears must have compared the first motorcar to the trusty nag, which was soon to be advertised with hefty cash rebates and complimentary oat bags. The Tesla would not go up against a new car, which would enjoy a de facto head start thanks to more than a century of development.

Hence, we looked back over automotive history for a suitable candidate. Way back, in fact. Now, racing a year-old Ford Model T against a new Tesla Model S across one-fifth of America is, really, in no way fair to either car. Neither was designed to be a continent crosser. While the Model T was undoubtedly the single greatest catalyst for the motor-vehicle infrastructure we now take for granted, it is also woefully, dangerously obsolete. Even the flow of suburban or country main streets is too fast for this mph buggy.

Would there be blood? With any luck, no. But there might be chaos, and almost certainly frostbite.

The Ford Model T. Accordingly, the car was the first to be built in very large numbers on an assembly line, rather than each example being put together individually a much more time-consuming and labour-intensive process. Therefore these Fords were assembled on a moving line, using sets of parts that were fully interchangeable between the cars being built, resulting in rapid production and lower costs.

For the record, it is appreciated that the first mass-produced car to be built on an assembly line was in fact the Curved Dash Oldsmobile, dating from , but the approach was developed and applied on a much larger scale with the Model T.

The Model T, sold by the Ford Motor Company from to , was the earliest effort to make a car that most people could actually buy. The Model T was actually affordable and it became so popular at one point that a majority of Americans owned one, directly helping rural Americans become more connected with the rest of the country and leading to the numbered highway system. By day he was chief engineer at Edison Illuminating Company of Detroit, but at night Henry Ford labored over a gasoline engine.

He successfully tested one on Christmas Eve, , with the help of his wife, Clara, taking a break from Christmas cooking. The engine worked for 30 seconds, long enough to confirm for Ford that he was on the right track. Three years later, Ford developed the Quadcycle, a self-propelled vehicle. After two failed business ventures, the Ford Motor Company was born on June 16, The production of the Model T was preceded by eight car models through which Ford developed various aspects that would eventually come together as the Model T.

Released on October 1, , the Ford Model T was a self-starting vehicle with a left-sided steering wheel, featuring an enclosed four-cylinder engine with a detachable cylinder head and a one-piece cylinder block. Fashioned from vanadium alloy steel, it offered superior strength despite its light weight. It also featured a generous ground clearance that could take the worst roads, which made it particularly enticing to rural drivers.

The Model T was the first Ford with all its parts built by the company itself. After selling 10, Model Ts, Ford announced that the company would cease to sell the Model R or Model S cars, famously remarking that “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.

If someone makes a Model T in their garage today, it is a replica, not the real thing. If the Ford Motor Company tasks two men with building a half dozen cars that are produced with the same tolerances as the original, then they are not only authentic, but are arguably the resumption of production that ended more than 70 years ago. Gary S. Looks like a Model T. Rather, this was the resumption of production of the vehicle by the Ford Motor Co.

Speaking of the assembly line, this has something to do with why they selected the Model T as the one to resume building rather than any other vintage.

In , automobile manufacturer Henry Ford introduced the Model T. This automobile became the most popular and affordable car available to the American people during the s and the s. In , the Model T sold for six hundred dollars. Twelve years later, thanks to Ford’s use of the assembly line, interchangeable parts, and unskilled labor, the Model T’s price had dropped to just dollars, making it easily affordable for the typical U.

S family. Helping to keep the price low was Ford’s unwillingness to provide consumers with any frills on the Model T. Every Model T left the factory painted black, reducing the cost of paint and helping Ford to reduce the car’s cost. Between and , Ford only made two major changes to the Model T’s design-adding roofs to the cars and equipping the autos with self-starters.

Cities quickly grew in geographic size, as workers, who formerly resided near their places of employment, moved to the suburbs. Schools became larger, as children could be bused long distances to receive their education. Social activities, such as dating, changed as people could travel greater distances to movie theaters, art galleries, and other entertainment venues.

Promiscuity increased, as teenagers escaped the watchful eyes of their parents.

First, the good news. The Model T, like a modern car, had three pedals on the floor, but there the similarity ends. The accelerator is a lever on the right side of the steering wheel. The pedal on the left is the clutch for the two forward gears, the pedal in the middle engages reverse, and the one on the right is the brake. There was no starter button.

For years, Henry and Edsel Ford had been denying that the day was approaching. Asked whether they were working on a new model of car, after nearly two decades of producing the famous Model T, they kept mum. When he can produce, he talks. That changed in late May of , the day that saw the creation of the last-ever, first-ever mass-market car. Over the nearly two decades since it had first been introduced in , it had evolved somewhat—as can be seen in these photos—but it had never lost its signature look.

Even though it took a little longer for the actual last Model T in the world to be produced, as various factories wound down those operations, the official date of production of the last Model T at the landmark Highland Park plant was May 26, , according to Ford.
